The Rings of Power showrunners break down forging the One Ring in season 3
The Rings of Power’s third season will show Sauron forging the One Ring, a pivotal moment in Tolkien’s story. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay says the sequence took three years of planning and is the most complex the series has filmed.
The work began with four pages of prose and involved decisions about Sauron’s clothing, injuries and magic, alongside extensive visual effects. Prop masters kept the ring recognisable to fans of Peter Jackson’s films, while making it slightly larger and heavier-looking; the season is due to premiere on Prime Video on 11 November with four episodes.
In short
- Season three features Sauron forging the One Ring.
- The sequence took three years of planning.
- The ring’s design remains recognisable, with a slight size change.
Explained simply
The Lord of the Rings stories are set in Middle-earth, where the Dark Lord Sauron seeks power over its peoples. In the tale’s history, he makes the One Ring to strengthen his control; the ring later becomes central to the conflict that drives The Lord of the Rings.
The Rings of Power is a television series set thousands of years before those events, in the Second Age of Middle-earth. It follows Sauron’s rise and the making of the rings of power, with Patrick McKay and J. D. Payne as its showrunners—the lead writers and producers responsible for shaping the series.
