‘The Rookie’ Is Officially Fixing the Show’s Biggest Problem
The Rookie will introduce a middle-aged rookie for the first time in a serious storyline, signalling a return to the series’ original focus on reinvention later in life. Troian Bellisario will join Season 9 as Stephanie “Stevie” Monroe, a divorced single mother of two starting over as a police officer.
The ABC series began in 2018 with Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan, who left his contracting business and moved to Los Angeles to join the LAPD after a divorce. As Nolan has risen to become a training officer, the show has shifted towards an ensemble procedural; Stevie’s story may reconnect it with the challenges of becoming a rookie later in life. Bellisario, 40, previously played a training officer in Prime Video’s On Call.
- Troian Bellisario joins The Rookie as a single mother entering the LAPD.
- Her Season 9 character echoes John Nolan’s late-in-life career change.
- The casting may bring the show back to its original premise.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Introducing Stevie could restore the series’ distinctive premise: an adult rebuilding her life through a demanding new career. A divorced parent’s experience may also bring fresh stakes and perspectives to the rookie storyline as the show’s original lead moves into a senior role.
The case against
The change may not fix what viewers see as the show’s biggest problem if their concern lies with its broader shift towards ensemble and procedural stories. A new character’s age and family circumstances alone cannot guarantee compelling writing, and centring another rookie could divert attention from established characters.
