‘The Ship Song’ and Nick Cave’s 1990s Brazilian romance: “I was in love”

Far Out ·

After years marked by addiction and personal turmoil, Nick Cave moved to São Paulo in 1989, completed drug rehabilitation and fell in love with Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro. That change shaped The Good Son, the Bad Seeds’ first album of the 1990s, shifting its emotional tone towards longing, tenderness and the possibility of joy.

Cave later said he was happy and in love during his first years in Brazil, where he and Carneiro had a son, Luke, in 1991. The album’s piano-led ballad ‘The Ship Song’ expresses devotion and vulnerability, asking for a lover’s commitment while acknowledging that happiness may not last. Its hopeful mood contrasts with the darkness of Cave’s previous two albums.

  • Cave’s new life in Brazil reshaped the Bad Seeds’ sound.
  • The Good Son reflected his early happiness and romance.
  • ‘The Ship Song’ mixes devotion with a sense of change ahead.
