The Day of the Jackal is a spy thriller based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel about a professional assassin hired to kill a French president. A 1973 film adaptation made the story widely known, and the television series gives it a modern setting.
The story follows the assassin, known as the Jackal, and the British intelligence officer pursuing him. Its appeal is part of a long tradition of spy fiction built around covert work, international threats and a contest between people trying to stay one step ahead of each other.
