Northern Ireland enjoyed a highly successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning gold, silver and bronze within 109 minutes across athletics and swimming. Kate O’Connor’s heptathlon victory was especially significant, delivering Team NI’s first gold of the Games and its first athletics gold since 1986, while boxing also secured at least four further medals through semi-final places.

O’Connor finished with 6,569 points, 291 ahead of her nearest rival, and set season’s bests in the long jump and javelin; it was her sixth consecutive championship medal but first senior gold. Ellie McCartney won a surprise bronze in the women’s 200m breaststroke, while Daniel Wiffen recovered from earlier disappointing swims to take silver in the men’s 1,500m; Michaela Walsh, Jude Gallagher, Willie John McCartan and Jon McConnell are guaranteed at least boxing bronzes.
