Uganda has withdrawn from the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, with military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba citing the ongoing public dispute between Prince Harry and King Charles as the reason, saying he backed the monarch and would not support anything without royal approval. PR expert Mark Borkowski described the move as a "warning" to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, arguing that their combative public statements against the King are now damaging Invictus, an event he called Harry's "unimpeachable" legacy project, and that their portrayal of themselves as victims is failing to win public sympathy.

The withdrawal followed King Charles's letter confirming Harry and Meghan remain "private citizens" without working royal status or use of their HRH titles, which the Sussexes publicly criticised. General Kainerugaba said he acted to "quash" factions within Uganda's defence ministry sympathetic to the couple, despite Uganda's defence minister having appeared alongside Harry at an Invictus event in London only two months earlier. A YouGov poll of 4,506 adults, conducted after the row, found 51% of Britons do not want the Sussexes to return as working royals, against just 16% who do, with a third undecided.
