The Guardian reports that a new documentary, *The Swan: Behind the Mirror*, revisits Fox’s *The Swan*, a reality show that subjected contestants to extensive cosmetic surgery in pursuit of a narrow beauty ideal. The programme ran for two seasons in 2004 and is remembered for exposing viewers to contestants’ pain and humiliation; the documentary examines how reality-TV demands distorted its promise of personal transformation.

Contestants were recruited with offers of free procedures alongside fitness, nutrition and self-esteem support, and some hoped the experience would help them beyond their appearance. The film features several of the 32 women who took part and some producers, who say the televised portrayal often bore little relation to what happened; creator Nely Galán declined to participate. Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr frames the series as an extreme example of the period’s pressures on women and the manipulation built into reality television.
