Interpol, one of New York's most consistent rock bands since their 2002 debut, have released their eighth studio album, This Mirror Weighs a Ton, on 28 August. Frontman Paul Banks and guitarist Daniel Kessler discussed the record in an interview, describing a refreshed creative process involving new collaborators that brought fresh energy to the band's longstanding lineup.

The album marks the studio debut of producer Andrew Wyatt, known for co-writing hits for Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, and touring bassist Brad Truax, who joined Interpol live in 2011 but had never previously recorded with them. Sessions began in spring 2024 at Wyatt's West Village studio, with Truax writing basslines to Kessler's chords for the first time, freeing Banks—who had played bass on the band's previous three albums following co-founder Carlos Dengler's 2010 departure—to focus on guitar and vocals. Both musicians, now based abroad in Barcelona and Berlin respectively, said returning to New York for the project felt like coming home.
