Ecuador has emerged as a crucial ally in President Donald Trump's regional drug cartel crackdown, with U.S. and Ecuadorian military forces working jointly to intercept narcotics and dismantle criminal networks. This partnership represents a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy priorities, focusing military resources on Western Hemisphere threats rather than distant regions. The cooperation has yielded substantial results in recent months, according to Ecuador's foreign minister Roberto Kury, who emphasised the collaborative nature of operations between American and Ecuadorian forces.

Ecuador faces an enormous challenge, with approximately 70 percent of the world's cocaine passing through its ports as criminal groups battle for control of trafficking routes. The cocaine trade is estimated at roughly $30 billion annually, and the surge in cartel violence has transformed Ecuador from one of Latin America's safer countries into a key frontline in the regional conflict. President Daniel Noboa declared an "internal armed conflict" and deployed the military accordingly. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has praised Ecuador as the U.S.'s most "aggressive" partner, with U.S. and Ecuadorian "elite forces" working on an unprecedented day-to-day basis to dismantle terrorist organisations, though Ecuador maintains strict sovereignty over military operations on its soil.
