The Voice is a televised singing competition in which performers audition for coaches, then compete in rounds including duets called Battles. Coaches choose which singer from each pairing advances, while a “steal” lets another coach keep a singer who was not selected.

Chari and Marcus Ladden Jr. are singers from Atlanta who joined Queen Latifah’s team after their auditions. Chari, a surgical technologist, is 31; Ladden is 19. Their Battle song, “On My Own”, was a 1986 hit for Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald, and LaBelle advised Latifah ahead of the performance.

The programme is airing its 30th season on NBC. Its Battles give viewers a chance to compare singers directly, while the coaches’ choices and steals shape who continues in the competition.
