The documentary The Librarians, recently nominated for an Emmy, follows US librarians resisting efforts to remove books from school libraries. Director Kim Snyder says its subject remains urgent as similar measures are being proposed nationally, with supporters describing them as safeguards against inappropriate material and critics calling them politically driven censorship.

The film began after Snyder learned of a 2021 Texas list of about 850 books, many concerning race and gender identity, targeted for removal. It includes librarians such as Julie Miller in Florida, who says she lost her job after questioning removals, and Amanda Jones in Louisiana, who received threats after opposing a ban initiative. The documentary will reach major streaming services in October during Banned Books Week, alongside a voting-focused campaign and a planned graphic-novel adaptation with Penguin Random House.
