The wave beneath the wave
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro campaigned in rural counties despite being expected to win re-election, following a strategy of visiting communities that had voted against him. The tour suggests his campaign is trying to build support across the state rather than relying only on Democratic strongholds.
In the campaign’s final 10 days, Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis travelled through 29 counties, including 14 that had voted against Shapiro in 2022. Stops included college campuses, union halls, a diner and a Steelers watch party; in Milford, they visited a county Donald Trump carried by 24 percentage points in 2024.
In short
- Shapiro campaigned across 29 Pennsylvania counties in 10 days.
- Fourteen counties had voted against him in 2022.
- His strategy centres on showing up in opposing communities.
