Designers Isaque Seneda and Gabriel Abrucio have created ShieldFont, a typeface intended to make webpages readable to people while presenting AI scrapers with misleading text in the underlying HTML. It is designed as a practical opt-out for publishers concerned about unauthorised AI training, potentially reducing the value of data collected by bots that ignore restrictions.

The font uses ligatures to display intended words while replacing them in source text with grammatically similar but contextually unrelated alternatives, such as “horse” for “potato”. Its dictionary contains nearly 12,000 common words; the creators say it changes 24.5% of words on average and caused more than 90% of otherwise accepted pages to be rejected in tests across six scraper pipelines, while retained pages included substantial false but plausible-looking content.
