CBS and MTV VMAs Attract a Combined 8.4 Million Viewers, Making it the Most-Watched Since 2015 and Up 51% From Last Year

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards drew a combined 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, making it the most-watched ceremony since 2015 and 51% higher than last year. The figures are Nielsen same-day estimates and may change in the final results. An NFL game ran late before the ceremony, delaying its CBS broadcast by several minutes.

CBS averaged 7.61 million viewers, MTV’s simulcast 686,000 and an MTV encore 142,000; each was up on 2025. The show also grew among adults aged 18–49, 25–54 and 18–34, while CBS reported 31.1 million social interactions and 159 million video views. Performances and highlights included Madonna’s first VMA performance in 23 years, Taylor Swift’s awards and new video premiere, and tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael.
