These small changes can improve your home surround sound in a big way

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Most home surround sound systems underperform not because of faulty equipment, but due to poor room setup and speaker placement—all of which can be corrected through low-cost adjustments like repositioning speakers, adding soft furnishings, and running built-in calibration tools.

– Room acoustics matter most: hard surfaces such as bare walls, tile floors and windows reflect sound waves, creating muddy audio. Adding rugs, curtains, artwork and framed photos can significantly reduce these reflections without requiring expensive acoustic foam.
– Speaker placement is critical: front left and right speakers should sit about one foot from walls with spacing equal to their distance from the listening position, angled toward the main seating area. The centre channel goes above or below the TV at ear level, whilst surrounds position to the sides (or back for 7.1 systems).
– Subwoofer positioning heavily influences bass quality and varies by room. Ported subwoofers must have space around their vents; for others, trial placement in two or three spots will reveal the optimal location given your room's materials and furniture.
– Calibration tools are often overlooked but simple to use. Most modern AV receivers from brands like Yamaha and Pioneer include automatic calibration software that tests each speaker and optimises settings.

  • Reposition existing speakers and add soft furnishings before buying new equipment.
  • Room acoustics account for over half of what you hear; hard surfaces cause poor sound quality.
  • Subwoofer placement varies by room; test multiple positions to find the best spot.
