‘They are now athletes’ – how do referees get ready for a season?

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

Professional referees serving the Premier League and Championship are undertaking intensive pre-season preparation to meet the growing physical and tactical demands of modern football. The work matters because every decision is heavily scrutinised, while officials must keep pace with faster matches, changing tactics and the impact of five substitutions.

The Professional Referee Group gathers regularly at Loughborough for training, analysis and fitness work, with referees sometimes completing two or three sessions a day. Former player and firefighter Sam Allison said the role requires far more preparation than many people realise, while Sam Barrott noted that late attacking substitutions can sharply increase officials’ workload. Physical performance manager Francis Bunce said referees are increasingly regarded as athletes, despite generally being older than players because of the experience required.

  • Match analysis helps officials prepare for each team’s tactics.
  • Five substitutions can make late stages physically tougher.
