These figures, which specify the maximum height a CPU cooler can be to fit inside a given case, are relied upon by PC builders to ensure compatibility before purchasing components, so errors in the published data risk buyers ending up with coolers that do not actually fit their chassis.

Noctua's findings underline the importance of not taking manufacturer-listed specifications at face value, with the company stressing that "every millimetre can count" when it comes to cooler fitment. The company said the discovery is a clear illustration of "why it's so important to take actual measurements" rather than relying solely on quoted figures, highlighting a wider quality-control issue across PC case listings that could affect builders planning upgrades or new systems.
