Journey’s 1986 album Raised On Radio was commercially successful but deepened divisions within the band, contributing to the collapse of its classic line-up. The recording process gave singer Steve Perry greater creative control after his successful solo album, while bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were largely excluded.

Released in April 1986, the album reached No. 4 and produced four Top 20 singles. Smith played on only three tracks, Valory did not appear, and studio musicians including Randy Jackson filled in; after 40 tour dates, Perry halted the remaining shows and did not return for a decade.
