This old Nokia phone got an AI Upgrade it was never designed for

Engadget ·

Turkish entrepreneur Emir Karşıyakalı has adapted the original Nokia 6300 to work with modern AI chatbots through an app called Aikon. The project gives the nearly 20-year-old phone new uses despite its outdated browser, though it cannot solve the bigger problem of dwindling 2G networks.

A Go server connects the phone to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok, using each company’s API and paid token billing; responses are split into 8kB blocks the phone can handle. Aikon also offers a reading mode, offline saving, photo analysis and voice messages of up to 30 seconds, and supports eight languages. The app is open source, but it cannot run on the original 6300 in the US because T-Mobile shut down its last 2G network there in August.

In short

  • Aikon brings major AI chatbots to the original Nokia 6300.
  • A Go server makes responses readable on the old phone.
  • The app cannot work on US 2G networks.

Explained simply

The Nokia 6300 is a basic mobile phone first released nearly 20 years ago, before today’s smartphone apps and AI chatbots were common. Its limited browser and older mobile network technology make it difficult to use many modern online services.

Emir Karşıyakalı, an entrepreneur in Turkey, created Aikon to connect the phone to AI services such as ChatGPT and Claude. A server handles the connection and sends replies in small blocks the phone can display; using the services also involves paid access to the companies’ systems.

The project shows how software can extend the uses of older devices, but it still depends on mobile networks being available. In places where 2G has been switched off, the original phone cannot connect, regardless of the app.
