Raspberry Pi OS version 6.3 has been released with a redesigned desktop interface offering docked and launcher options alongside the traditional taskbar, whilst rising component prices have renewed debate over firmware restrictions that lock devices to their original RAM specifications. With 16GB Pi 5 models now costing £292.80 in the UK or $305 in the US—a significant increase from earlier prices—the cost barrier has reinvigorated interest in repair and upgrade options that the firmware explicitly blocks.

The firmware restriction, introduced in June and confirmed by Raspberry Pi's Senior Principal Software Engineer Phil Elwell, prevents RAM modifications by locking device specifications at manufacture. Mike Thompson, the original creator of Raspbian, has publicly criticised these high prices, arguing they undermine the platform's founding mission of providing affordable computing access to a new generation of programmers and noting that they may discourage young people from pursuing computer science learning.
