Thousands of households in Perth will face another six months of fruit and vegetable restrictions as authorities continue efforts to eradicate Queensland fruit fly. The quarantine, which was due to end on 26 September, has been extended until 31 March 2027 to protect Western Australia’s $1.49 billion horticultural industry.

A 1.5-kilometre red zone covers more than 7,000 properties across South Perth, Como, Kensington, Bentley and East Victoria Park, while a 15-kilometre orange buffer zone remains in place. Residents must remove ripe and ripening host fruit and fruiting vegetables, avoid placing them in compost or green-waste bins, and not move them unless they have been treated by cooking, freezing, drying or preserving.
