Thune says Iran sanctions to be added to Russia sanctions bill

The Hill · 2 months ago

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said sanctions targeting Iran would be added to pending legislation aimed at increasing pressure on Russia. The change could broaden the bill’s reach beyond Moscow’s war in Ukraine, while helping secure support for bringing the long-delayed measure to a Senate vote.

The bipartisan Russia sanctions package would penalise Russia if it refuses to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine, violates an agreement or launches further aggression. Its proposed secondary tariffs were reportedly reduced from 500% to 100%, with the president able to target up to five countries; Senate leaders still needed agreement on timing for a vote.

  • Iran sanctions will be added to the Russia bill.
  • The measure seeks to pressure Russia over Ukraine.
  • Senators may vote on it soon.
