Tin Lung Shares Foreboding Number ‘THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR’
Los Angeles electronic artist Rett Smith, who records as Tin Lung, has released the single ‘THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR’. The track is the lead single and closing piece in a trilogy of short releases, and previews ‘EP 3’, due on 4 December.
The four-track EP draws on future garage and IDM and was made using hardware only, reflecting Smith’s stated opposition to algorithm-driven music and digital sameness. He recorded, produced and mixed it at Tularosa Sound in Los Angeles; longtime collaborator Stefan Brown mastered it at Abbey Road Studios. Smith has previously contributed guitar to Hudson Mohawke’s ‘Cry Sugar’, and plans to release his debut full-length in spring 2027.
In short
- Tin Lung has released a new single ahead of ‘EP 3’.
- The four-track EP is due on 4 December.
- Rett Smith says he made it entirely with hardware.
Explained simply
Tin Lung is the recording name of Los Angeles electronic artist Rett Smith. He has also played guitar on work by Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke, whose music spans electronic styles.
Smith’s music draws on future garage and IDM, forms of electronic music built around programmed rhythms and detailed sound design. He says he prefers making music with hardware equipment and opposes algorithm-driven music and digital sameness; these choices help explain the approach behind his releases.
“EP 3” is the final instalment in a trilogy of short releases, and Smith has said he plans to put out his first full-length album in spring 2027. The project matters as part of his developing catalogue and as an example of an artist making a stated choice about how electronic music is produced.
