Top Chef’s judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons argue that the Bravo series merits another Emmy because its location-based production is more demanding than studio-bound reality competitions. They also say its lasting influence on the culinary world, alongside its emphasis on skill and collegiality rather than conflict, has made appearing on the programme comparable in prestige to receiving a James Beard Award.

The programme has received 57 Emmy nominations across 23 seasons and last won best reality competition programme in 2010; this year it is also nominated for hosting, casting and directing. Season 23 was filmed in North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina, involved moving a crew of about 150 people and working with perishable food, knives and fire, and was complicated when a contestant withdrew for medical reasons. Host Kristen Kish, now in her third season, said she has become more confident in responding authentically to contestants, including during an emotional moment with chef Nana Araba.
