Tom Cruise’s 110-Minute Action Flop Is Now Officially Taking Over Streaming

Collider · 53 minutes ago

Tom Cruise's 2017 reboot of *The Mummy*, widely regarded as a critical and creative misfire, has climbed to become the fourth most-streamed film on Prime Video, nearly a decade after its release. The film was originally conceived as the launchpad for Universal Studios' "Dark Universe", an attempted shared cinematic universe built around its classic monster properties, but the project collapsed after the film's poor reception, meaning no further instalments followed.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film stars Cruise as US Army Sergeant Nick Morton, who accidentally revives the vengeful ancient Egyptian princess Ahmanet, played by Sofia Boutella, and becomes supernaturally bound to her as he begins a monstrous transformation. Critics have long noted that the film struggles to settle on a consistent tone, veering between action, horror, comedy and universe-building without fully committing to any. Universal's wider Dark Universe ambitions, which also included the poorly received *Dracula Untold*, never materialised, leaving this Cruise vehicle as one of the more unusual entries in his otherwise successful filmography. It is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
