Tom Morello Launches Mary Morello Memorial Project in Honor of His Late Mother
Musician Tom Morello has launched the Mary Morello Memorial Project to honour his mother, Mary Morello, who died earlier this month aged 102. A teacher and lifelong activist, she shaped Tom's political outlook and was involved in causes ranging from feeding the poor during the Great Depression to opposing Jim Crow laws and supporting anti-colonial movements, and the project aims to keep her legacy of "compassion, courage and service" alive.
The fund will channel donations to charities Mary supported, including the UFW Foundation, Médecins Sans Frontières, Jail Guitar Doors USA, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and the Center for Native American Youth, among others. Morello has also urged supporters to take direct action, such as volunteering or protesting, between now and 1st October, which would have been Mary's 103rd birthday, and to share their efforts on Instagram tagging the project.
