Tom Waits has announced a 50th anniversary vinyl reissue of his 1976 album "Small Change", accompanied by the release of rare archive footage. The record is considered one of the defining works in the singer-songwriter's catalogue, marking the point at which his distinctive vocal style fully matured and drawing on influences from the American songbook, jazz and beat poetry.

The reissue is due out on 2 October, with the announcement accompanied by a clip of Waits performing "The Piano Has Been Drinking" on the late-1970s television programme Fernwood Tonight. "Small Change" featured tracks including "Tom Traubert's Blues", "Step Right Up" and "The Piano Has Been Drinking", with Waits previously crediting the album's style to his time as a nightclub doorman and eavesdropping on late-night diner conversations. The news follows other recent Waits activity, including the spoken-word track "The Fly" and his politically charged collaboration with Massive Attack, "Boots On The Ground", which will be released together on 12-inch vinyl on 4 September.
