CBS Sports has placed Tony Romo on leave until further notice after he was arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of drink-driving. The decision could remove the network’s lead NFL analyst from broadcasts at the start of the 2026 season, affecting its coverage alongside long-time commentary partner Jim Nantz.
Romo was stopped on Interstate 43 on 23 July while driving a black Jeep, where officers reportedly saw an open bottle of alcohol. He declined an intoxication test and is due to appear in court on 21 September; CBS says JJ Watt and Tracy Wolfson will join Nantz during his absence, with the NFL season beginning on 9 September.

Tony Romo is a former National Football League quarterback who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2004 to 2016. After retiring as a player, he became CBS Sports’ leading NFL television analyst, working alongside play-by-play commentator Jim Nantz on many of the network’s biggest games.
CBS Sports is one of the main US broadcasters of NFL matches, and its lead commentary team is a prominent part of its coverage. Analysts explain tactics, players and key moments during a game, while the main commentator describes the action.
Drink-driving allegations in the United States can lead to criminal proceedings, with rules and penalties varying by state. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: the case is decided through the legal process, and a person may challenge the evidence against them.
