A coalition of 50 Canadian screen-industry organisations has urged Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to preserve enforceable requirements for foreign streaming services to invest in Canadian programming. The groups say proposed policy changes have created uncertainty for producers and could weaken protections intended to support domestic culture and production.

The open letter follows June proposals that could sharply reduce or remove obligations on platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video, despite a separate annual C$600m (£?/$430m) content pledge. The CRTC had raised streamer contribution requirements from 5% to 15%, a rate the coalition calls appropriate; the government says changes aim to reduce costs for families, while industry representatives fear they favour large US technology firms.
