Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey has publicly attacked the growing influence of socialist figures within the Democratic Party, urging members of the Democratic Socialists of America to form their own separate party rather than remain within Democratic ranks. Gottheimer, a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition and member of the House Intelligence Committee, accused the DSA of attempting to "hijack" the Democratic Party to use as a "vessel" for policies he characterised as communist, "anti-American" and supportive of open borders. The remarks reflect an intensifying internal struggle between the party's moderate and progressive wings, which has been highlighted by recent high-profile primary contests.

Speaking to Fox News, Gottheimer argued that mainstream Democratic leaders need to firmly reject radical progressive positions in order to retain voter trust and remain competitive in closely fought congressional races. His comments come amid a broader pattern of DSA-backed candidates gaining traction in various primaries, including in Missouri, and follow endorsements of further-left candidates by prominent progressive lawmakers in races such as Michigan's Democratic Senate primary. The dispute underscores ongoing tension over the party's direction ahead of upcoming elections.
