Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney is set to have ankle surgery after suffering a high-ankle sprain during Wednesday practice, leaving his availability for Saturday’s game against Notre Dame in doubt. The injury adds uncertainty for the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes, who rely on Toney as a leading offensive playmaker alongside quarterback Darian Mensah.

Toney is expected to have TightRope surgery, and Miami hopes he can return in four to six weeks, although that timetable is uncertain. He has made 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Notre Dame was ranked 11th in the first College Football Playoff poll, and its betting advantage over Miami widened from five to 6.5 points as concern about Toney grew.

Explained simply

Miami’s Hurricanes and Notre Dame are US college football teams competing in the same top-level division. Miami’s offence relies in part on its receivers, who catch passes from the quarterback and help move the team towards scoring.

Malachi Toney has been one of Miami’s leading receivers this season, so his availability matters as the teams meet during an important part of the campaign. The game also has wider significance because both teams are competing for strong positions in the rankings used to select the College Football Playoff.
