Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Has the Biggest Unit Ever in a Total War Game — and of Course It Belongs to the Orks
Creative Assembly has revealed that the Orks’ Stompa will be the largest unit ever featured in a Total War game when Total War: Warhammer 40,000 launches. The reveal matters because it signals the scale the developer is aiming for in adapting Warhammer 40,000’s huge battlefield machines to the strategy series.
The Stompa is a heavily armed, walking Ork battle fortress with multiple guns, a massive claw and a large support crew. In the showcased battle, it survives a rare Astra Militarum orbital strike before eventually exploding; Creative Assembly also said it hopes to introduce even larger units later, although the game still has no release date.
In short
- Ork Stompa is Total War’s largest-ever unit.
- It survives a powerful orbital strike in gameplay.
- Creative Assembly plans potentially larger future units.
Explained simply
Total War is a long-running strategy game series that combines turn-based empire-building with large-scale real-time battles involving thousands of soldiers. Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop miniatures game and science fiction universe set in a grim, distant future; Creative Assembly is now adapting it into the Total War series for the first time.
In Warhammer 40,000, the Orks are a group of alien warriors known for building crude but powerful machines of war. The Stompa is their most famous creation: a towering walking fortress equipped with multiple guns, an enormous mechanical claw and a crew of Orks who operate it in battle.
Total War games are known for depicting massive battles with hundreds or thousands of soldiers fighting simultaneously. Warhammer 40,000's universe includes monstrous war machines that can tower over entire armies, and bringing these to life in a game whilst keeping it playable presents significant creative and technical challenges.
