Developing story first seen 5 hours ago
Toy Story 5 will begin streaming on Disney Plus on 23 September, confirming the next stage of its release after its successful cinema run. The move underlines the continuing commercial strength of Pixar’s flagship franchise, which overcame concerns about sequel fatigue to become the series’ highest-grossing film.
The film opened in cinemas on 19 June, earned $1.1 billion worldwide against a reported $250 million budget, and became available to rent or buy digitally on 18 August. Its roughly three-month cinema-to-streaming window follows Disney’s recent pattern; it also holds Rotten Tomatoes scores of 93% from critics and 94% from audiences. Pixar laid off 100 to 150 staff shortly after release, reportedly connected to the performance of Hoppers.

Toy Story is a series of animated films made by Pixar about toys that come to life when people are not around. The stories have centred on characters including Woody, a cowboy doll, and Buzz Lightyear, a space-themed action figure, as they deal with friendship, change and belonging.
Pixar is the animation studio behind films such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Inside Out, and has been owned by Disney since 2006. Disney releases Pixar films first in cinemas, then for digital rental or purchase, before adding them to its Disney Plus subscription service.
The Toy Story films have been among Pixar’s most commercially successful releases since the first film arrived in 1995. A fifth instalment is significant because long-running film series are closely watched by studios, cinemas and streaming services as tests of whether familiar characters can still attract large audiences.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is scheduled to begin streaming on Disney+ on 23 September. The fifth instalment arrived in cinemas on 19 June and has since exceeded $1 billion worldwide, according to the reports.
The film reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the wider group of toys as they confront a tablet called Lilypad, whose arrival disrupts Bonnie’s playtime. Deadline says the film was directed by Andrew Stanton, with Kenna Harris as co-director, and credits Stanton and Harris as writers.
Both reports portray the cinema release as a major commercial success. Source 1 puts its worldwide total at about $1.1 billion and says it is the franchise’s highest-grossing entry, while Deadline focuses on its $160 million domestic opening and notes that it became the third Toy Story film to pass the $1 billion threshold.
The streaming announcement follows a digital rental and purchase release on 18 August, according to Source 1. Deadline also reports that Disney has released a music video for Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song I Knew It, I Knew You, available through Disney+, Spotify and Apple Music.
Where outlets differ
Source 1 emphasises the digital-to-streaming timetable, the film’s reported $1.1 billion total, critical and audience reception, Pixar job cuts and the studio’s forthcoming slate. Deadline concentrates on opening-weekend records, production credits, the official plot summary and the Taylor Swift music-video release.
The figures are not necessarily contradictory: Source 1 gives a more specific worldwide gross, whereas Deadline says only that the film has crossed $1 billion.
