Trailing 8-0 & down to six players – abandoned game labelled a ‘farce’
A Hampshire Premier League Division One match was abandoned early in the second half after Andover Town went 8-0 ahead and Paulsgrove were left with only six players. Andover manager Robbie Skeates called the circumstances “a complete farce”, while the league has opened an investigation.
Skeates said four Paulsgrove players did not return after half-time, when the score was 7-0, and another left injured after Andover’s eighth goal. Football rules prevent a match continuing when either side has fewer than seven players; Paulsgrove posts said the players were genuinely injured. Andover are mid-table in the 16-team, 12th-tier league, while Paulsgrove are bottom after losing all 10 of their games this season.
In short
- Andover led Paulsgrove 8-0 before the match was abandoned.
- Paulsgrove were down to six players early in the second half.
- The Hampshire Premier Football League is investigating.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Andover’s frustration is understandable: four Paulsgrove players reportedly did not return after half-time, and the match ended when the side fell below the seven-player minimum. In a competitive league, teams and spectators can reasonably expect a fixture to be completed where possible, and the league needs to establish whether the withdrawals were unavoidable and whether its rules were followed.
The case against
Paulsgrove’s account is that the players were genuinely injured, and a team should not be expected to continue when doing so could worsen injuries or leave players unsafe. With the score already 7-0 and the side struggling at the bottom of the league, the withdrawals may reflect an unfortunate combination of circumstances rather than misconduct; the investigation should establish the facts before blame is assigned.
Explained simply
Andover Town and Paulsgrove play in the Hampshire Premier League Division One, a local league in the English football pyramid. The clubs have had very different seasons: Andover are in mid-table, while Paulsgrove have lost all 10 of their matches.
Football matches cannot continue if either team has fewer than seven players. That rule explains why a game may be stopped when a side has several players unavailable, regardless of the score. The league’s investigation will consider what happened around the abandonment.
