Trainwatch explores isolation and guilt at a remote crossing

The Guardian · 1 hour ago

Trainwatch is a forthcoming indie game about Troy, a railway worker managing a level crossing in an isolated, unnamed backwater while attempting to confront a troubling past. Created by Remigiusz “Rem” Michalski of Harvester Games, it uses mundane routines, solitude and an unsettling presence in the surrounding fog to explore isolation, guilt and possible redemption.

Players spend one in-game month operating the crossing, doing household chores, remaining sober and calling Troy’s wife nightly, alongside exploring nearby locations and helping local residents. It is Michalski’s sixth game, following Cat Lady and Lorelai, and draws partly on his childhood memories of trains near his home and his own secluded life as a developer in a small Polish town.

  • Trainwatch turns railway routine into an eerie mystery.
  • Its story explores loneliness, guilt and recovery.
  • The game is inspired by its creator’s personal memories.
