Julia Egler, now 18, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murders of her mother, Kelly McCollom, and McCollom’s boyfriend, Matthew Szejnrok, in Florida in 2024. The killings followed disagreements over the relationship and, authorities said, McCollom’s disapproval of Egler’s gender transition; the case also drew attention to Egler’s stated wish to be rehabilitated.

Egler was 16 at the time and initially claimed an intruder had broken into the home. Investigators found evidence that undermined that account, including a revolver, bloody footprints and no sign of an intruder on exterior cameras; Egler later confessed and said she had staged the scene. She was originally charged with first-degree murder and will be eligible for release after serving 25 years.
