Dogma filmmaking began in Denmark in 1995, when a group of directors set out rules intended to keep films focused on stories and performances rather than polished production. The first film made under the original manifesto was Thomas Vinterberg’s The Celebration, which featured Trine Dyrholm.

Zentropa is a Danish film company, and its Dogma25 collection brings together five films by directors including Milad Alami, Annika Berg, Isabella Eklöf and Jesper Just. Just is an artist making his first feature film; he wrote this story with screenwriter Sissel Dalsgaard Thomsen. The collection is backed by Danish broadcaster DR, Nordisk Film Distribution, Netflix in the Nordic countries and regional film funds.
