Mastodon bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders has discussed the band's new album "Marrow Deep", due out on 28 August via Loma Vista Recordings, in an interview with Australia's Everblack podcast. The record is significant as the first full-length Mastodon album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, expanding the long-standing four-piece into a five-member outfit alongside notable contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. Sanders described the band as proud of the finished work and eager for its release after living with the completed recording for close to a year.

The album was co-produced at Mastodon's own West End Sound studio in Atlanta by Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, and mixed by Andrew Scheps, with the recording finished roughly nine to ten months ago. Sanders said "Marrow Deep" marks a heavier, riff-driven return to the band's earlier sound compared with 2021's sprawling double album "Hushed And Grim", comparing the shift to the one between "Crack The Skye" and "The Hunter". He also praised Johnston's authentic contribution of riffs and songs to the writing process, calling it a natural fit for the band's new lineup.
