Truck driver, 51, who was using tablet behind the wheel before killing family of three in tragedy ‘exploited’ in political attack ad is sentenced to 22 years in prison

Daily Mail ·

Ohio truck driver Modou Ngom, 51, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for a nine-vehicle crash that killed Luke and Lynnea Soposki and their one-year-old son, Logan. The case has drawn further attention because photographs of the family were used in a Republican campaign advert attacking former senator Sherrod Brown.

The crash happened on Interstate 71 north of Columbus on 11 April, when Ngom’s lorry hit traffic slowing for roadworks; five other people were seriously injured. Ngom was convicted of three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and five of vehicular assault. Relatives accused him of being distracted by a tablet, but investigators said he was not using a phone or tablet at the time. The family’s estate and an injured survivor have also filed civil lawsuits.

In short

  • Ngom received a 22-year sentence over a fatal Ohio crash.
  • The crash killed a couple and their one-year-old son.
  • Investigators said he was not using a tablet or phone.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A campaign may argue that the family’s deaths are relevant to public debate about road safety, and that using a real case can make the consequences of policy failures more tangible to voters. If the advert accurately represented the crash and its relevance to the candidate’s record, the images could be defended as forceful political speech rather than an attempt to diminish the family.

The case against

The family’s relatives may reasonably see the use of their photographs in an attack advert as exploiting private grief for partisan advantage, especially without their consent. The case also warrants care because investigators said Ngom was not using a phone or tablet at the time, so implying otherwise could mislead viewers and unfairly turn a tragedy into a political weapon.
