The US Federal Communications Commission has barred the import and sale of new foreign-made advanced robots, including humanoid and quadruped models, alongside connected power inverters. The move is aimed chiefly at Chinese technology and matters because it expands Washington’s efforts to limit perceived national-security and supply-chain risks in sectors important to artificial intelligence, automation and electricity infrastructure.

The restrictions apply to new models, while equipment already authorised can still be used and sold. Officials said networked robots and inverters could create risks including cyber-attacks, surveillance, data theft or remote interference; manufacturers may seek exemptions through an FCC process involving the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security. The action follows similar US restrictions on foreign drones and wireless routers, and is expected to affect Chinese robotics suppliers such as Unitree.
