Trump offered few operational details on the AI Force, likening it loosely to Space Force, the sixth branch of the US military he established in 2019, though it remains unclear whether the new body would sit within the Department of Defense. His remarks come ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss AI, and follow a report that a US intelligence assessment generated using an AI chatbot wrongly identified a Chinese ship as carrying nuclear weapons components, nearly triggering a military intercept before the error was caught. The announcement also follows public protests against AI data centres and warnings from a former Anthropic researcher, who resigned accusing his company and OpenAI of recklessly racing towards "self-improving superintelligence."
