Trump envoys land in Ukraine for talks with Zelensky – after Russia pounds Kyiv with fresh strikes despite promise to pause attacks

Daily Mail · 42 minutes ago

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky, a day after holding closed-door negotiations with Vladimir Putin in Moscow as part of Donald Trump's renewed push to end the war in Ukraine. The visit came despite Russia continuing to strike other parts of Ukraine overnight, undermining a mutual pause agreed by Moscow and Kyiv on attacks against each other's capitals, and highlighting the fragility of the emerging diplomatic effort.

Putin had pledged to halt drone strikes on Kyiv for 72 hours from midnight, and Zelensky reciprocated by agreeing to suspend strikes on Moscow until Monday, but Russia went on to launch 108 drones overnight, of which 82 were shot down, hitting 11 locations including Zaporizhzhia, where a 74-year-old man was killed and three others injured. Witkoff and Kushner spent over three hours with Putin in Moscow, who called the conflict a "complicated situation" while praising Trump's efforts, and Russian adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as "constructive" and touched on potential US-Russia economic projects alongside the war. British, French and German national security advisers were also reported to be in Kyiv ahead of further US-Ukraine talks, as Trump said his envoys were bringing "a proposal to end the war".
