A union representing IRS employees has asked a court to block a Justice Department memo that would shield President Trump, his family and the Trump Organisation from certain tax examinations and claims. The case challenges the legality of the arrangement, arguing that it improperly prevents tax officials from pursuing work they are required to carry out and could confer a financial benefit on the president.

The memo, signed by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, formed part of the resolution of Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit over leaked tax records. It reportedly bars the government from examining specified pre-settlement tax filings or bringing related claims against Trump, his sons and affiliated entities; critics say the language is excessively broad, while Blanche has said future tax filings remain open to examination.
