Trump presses Senate on permanent daylight saving as salmonella recalls widen

President Donald Trump renewed pressure on the US Senate to approve legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent, after the House passed a related bill in July. The proposal would end the twice-yearly clock changes in participating states, but it faces resistance in the Senate, including concern about darker winter mornings and effects on school travel and body clocks. Trump has argued that ending the changes would be popular and avoid disruption, while the legislation would still require Senate approval before it could become law.

Separately, US food-safety authorities said recalls linked to a Salmonella Javiana outbreak associated with jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico were expanding through products made with or repackaged from the recalled peppers. The FDA said the outbreak had been linked to 345 reported illnesses in 27 states, including 36 hospitalisations, and that Coast Citrus Distributors had recalled remaining implicated peppers. On 14 August, the agency also listed further salmonella-related recalls, including Salata jalapeño avocado dressing and Hampton Grocer Lacnola Lactation Granola; the granola recall was a separate potential-contamination notice, not identified by the FDA as part of the jalapeño outbreak.

  • Trump urged Senate action on permanent daylight saving time after House passage.
  • The proposal remains contested, particularly over winter morning darkness and health concerns.
  • FDA-linked salmonella recalls widened as firms withdrew jalapeño-containing products; a separate granola recall was also announced.
