World number one Judd Trump suffered a shock first-round exit at the China Open, losing 6-3 to Thailand's Noppon Saengkham, world number 45, on Sunday. The defeat leaves Trump at risk of losing his top ranking before the end of the month, adding significance to a tournament he has previously won twice.

Trump fought back from two frames down to level the best-of-11 match before Saengkham won three frames in a row, aided by a match-high break of 120, to move 5-2 ahead and close out victory with a 78-0 final frame. It is the first China Open since 2019, now staged in Taiyuan rather than Beijing, and Trump had arrived in good form having beaten Kyren Wilson in the Shanghai Masters final. To retain his number one spot, the 36-year-old must now win the upcoming Wuhan Open, with Zhao Xintong best placed to overtake him. Other seeds also fell in the first round, including Barry Hawkins, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui, while the winner in Taiyuan will collect £250,000.
