They contend that unambiguous, overwhelming pressure signals resolve to both Iran and any would-be trading partners, potentially deterring further aggression without resorting to force. Given recent hostile missile strikes on neighbours such as the UAE, proponents see decisive economic action as a proportionate response that protects allies and upholds red lines against Iranian coercion.

The case against

Critics, including some who broadly favour firmness toward Tehran, caution that a campaign this expansive risks destabilising an already volatile region and could inflict disproportionate harm on ordinary Iranians and on neighbouring economies with legitimate trade ties. They worry that threatening secondary sanctions against third countries may alienate partners who feel coerced rather than consulted, undermining the coalition-building such pressure campaigns depend on. There is also concern that maximalist rhetoric, likening the effort to a military assault, narrows the space for diplomacy and could inadvertently strengthen hardliners in Tehran while raising the odds of miscalculation or wider conflict rather than reducing them.
