President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes the war in Iran is nearing its end, saying Tehran wants to make a deal, as the conflict continues to loom over the US midterm election campaign. In the same appearance, he dismissed as "laughable" a proposal for Canada to join the European Union as an associate member, warning he would impose heavy tariffs on Europe if the move were made with hostile intent towards the United States.

Trump's comments came a day after the House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution by 220 votes to 204, aimed at curbing his ability to continue military action against Iran without congressional approval, though such measures have repeatedly failed to reach his desk and he would likely veto one anyway. Democrats, including Representative Seth Moulton, accused the administration of prolonging the conflict beyond initial promises, while Republican Brian Mast defended the campaign as ending Iran's "continuous ongoing threat". Representative Thomas Massie separately read out articles of impeachment against War Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of unlawfully continuing military action without proper authorisation.
