Donald Trump blamed Fox News for Republican losses in the midterm elections, while also claiming he would have won by a landslide had he been on the ballot. The scale of Democratic victories appeared to prompt an unusually public acknowledgement that his influence had diminished, with Trump saying he would work with Democrats as a lame-duck president.

He repeated that message in conversations with the New York Times and Politico, while stressing that he retained veto power. Trump later appeared on Fox News to congratulate Democrats, despite attacking the network earlier in the evening. Privately, he reportedly criticised Republicans as “lazy” and “RINOs”, as questions grew over whether the party’s frustration with him would become more public.
