A 19-year-old sailor from the USS Abraham Lincoln faces non-judicial punishment after going overboard in what his wife described as a suicide attempt during a mental-health crisis. The case has intensified scrutiny of the carrier’s prolonged deployment and reported living conditions, while raising concerns about whether the sailor received adequate mental-health support.

According to documents reviewed by MS NOW, the Navy alleges he intentionally injured himself to avoid duty and failed to report for duty; a captain’s mast could cut up to half his pay. His wife said he had been denied paternity leave, was not assessed by a psychiatrist during five days in hospital, and did not receive therapy until nearly two weeks after returning home. The Lincoln has reportedly spent more than 250 consecutive days at sea, with complaints including food shortages, faulty sanitation and limited hot water; the Navy is sending additional counsellors and plans a rest stop in Thailand.
