Thomas Tuchel says he is "100% invested" in continuing as England manager through to Euro 2028, despite criticism of his tactics in the 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta. The manager, who signed a contract extension in February, has faced scrutiny for switching to a back five late in the game while leading 1-0, a move that preceded two late Argentina goals sending them through to face Spain in Sunday's final.
Tuchel argued the system was not to blame, instead pointing to players becoming passive after Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute opener, and said England still lack the instinct to control games on the ball. The Football Association, whose chief executive Mark Bullingham called the defeat "heartbreaking", retains confidence in Tuchel and notes England faced a tougher draw than under Gareth Southgate, plus gruelling logistics including 13 flights during the tournament. Tuchel substituted Gordon for defender Ezri Konsa on 72 minutes in the move now seen as the semi-final's turning point, but insists there is "an extra level" the team can still reach before Euro 2028, which England will co-host.
